Genies & Wishes
According to the monster manual entry for genies, the various different kind of genie can perform various types of Wish. Dao can perform Limited Wishes once per day, while Noble Djinn and Efreeti can each grant up to three wishes per day. To offset the overpowering effect this would have, a caveat (which in my opinion makes little sense) is added: they can only grant wishes to others, and specifically to non-genies. Besides this making little sense, I see no reason why genies would not enslave mortals and force them to ask for wishes that would benefit them.
To bring genies more in line with those seen in traditional Arabic folk tales such as the 1,001 Nights, these houserules change genies from Disney-style semi-omnipotent wishmakers into powerful extraplanar beings that can be commanded to perform a service for those who capture them.
|Dao||No wishes; but otherwise, whatever service their captor can force them to perform.|
|Djinni||No wishes; but otherwise, whatever service their captor can force them to perform.|
|Noble Djinni||Three bona fide Wishes, granted as a result of an ancient pact with the Archomentals of Air.
After all three are granted, the djinni must be released.
|Efreeti||1,001 days of servitude, or 3 specific services: captor's choice.|
|Marid||In the rare case one is captured; whatever service the captor can force them to perform.|
In all other respects, genies function identically to their descriptions in the Monstrous Manual.
